In a match played under extreme heat, France secured a 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Saturday, July 5, in Philadelphia. The game coincided with the 250th anniversary of the United States' Declaration of Independence, which was signed in the same city in 1776. Temperatures ranged from 36 to 38 degrees Celsius, making conditions grueling for the players.
France dominated possession in the first half with about 80%, but failed to register a single shot on target from five attempts. Paraguay managed two off-target shots. Early in the second half, substitute Désiré Doué won a penalty for France, which captain Kylian Mbappé converted in the 61st minute. It was Mbappé's seventh goal of the tournament, along with two assists. The 27-year-old now has 19 World Cup goals in 19 matches, just one shy of Lionel Messi's record of 20 in 30 games.
France had a perfect group stage, beating Senegal 3-1, Iraq 3-0, and Norway 4-1, followed by a 3-0 win over Sweden in the Round of 16. Paraguay, meanwhile, advanced from their group with four points (a 1-4 loss to the USA, a 1-0 win over Turkey, and a 0-0 draw with Australia). They then caused an upset by eliminating Germany on penalties (1-1 after extra time, 4-3 in the shootout).
In the quarterfinals, France will face Morocco, who defeated Canada 3-0 earlier on Saturday in Houston. France remains a strong contender for their second World Cup title after winning in 2018.
