Genesis has officially unveiled its new electric flagship SUV, the GV90, bringing to production the design first previewed years ago with the Neolum concept. That concept was praised for its clean-lined shape, a four-seat cabin with no B pillar, swiveling front seats, and an interior mixing leather, wool, and wood.

The production GV90 rides on the same 800 V E-GMP platform used by other Korean three-row electric SUVs, namely the Hyundai Ioniq 9 and the Kia EV9. A seven-seat, three-row version of the GV90 will eventually join the lineup and is expected to be the variant most commonly seen on the road.

Two launch trims

For the initial launch, Genesis is concentrating on two versions: a four-seat GV90 and the higher-end GV90 Neolum. The Neolum trim stays closest to the original concept, retaining the pillarless coach doors, which Genesis calls the Neolum Arch Gate. The automaker has previously said it gained the engineering knowledge needed to bring this dramatic, pillarless door design up to the safety standards required for volume production.

New safety feature

Every GV90 will come equipped with what the company describes as the world's first roof airbag, designed to deploy in a rollover situation. It is one of 12 airbags placed throughout the vehicle's interior, underscoring the emphasis Genesis has placed on occupant protection in its new electric flagship.
