Modest Village Named for Trump Sits in Golan Heights

A bare-bones prefab village in the Golan Heights carries Donald Trump’s name, but it has none of his trademark gilded style, and its Israeli residents are tired of being seen as a measure of their country’s shifting attitude toward the president.

A village in the Golan Heights is named after Donald Trump, but it looks nothing like the image the name may suggest. The settlement is made up of prefabricated homes and has a bare-bones character. There is no gold-plated luxury or polished Trump-style ornamentation to be found; the place is deliberately plain and functional.

Residents are, however, not celebrating the connection. They say they have grown tired of being regarded as a gauge of Israel's changing view of the president. Because the village bears such an unusual name, it tends to draw attention whenever political relations move up or down. Locals feel they are being watched less as a community and more as a barometer of diplomatic mood swings.

This discomfort is inseparable from the setting. The Golan Heights is an area often discussed in international politics, and a place in that region carrying a Trump name makes the contrast even sharper. The simple design of the settlement does not fit the towering, luxurious branding associated with Trump's business world.

For the people who live there, the label has become a burden. Their modest address has made them part of a broader political story they did not choose. They appear to want one thing above all: to be left alone, and not to be seen as a signal in someone else's political calculation.
