Google open-sources its 3D emoji set
Google announced it is fully open-sourcing its 3D emoji set on World Emoji Day, releasing raw .OBJ files for community use in VR, apps, or memes.

Google marked World Emoji Day on July 18, 2026, by announcing the complete open-sourcing of its 3D emoji set. The company will release raw .OBJ files to the public, enabling anyone to use them in creating virtual reality worlds, independent apps, or weird memes.
The Google Noto Emoji 3D set debuted in May 2026 and initially received mixed reactions, with some users responding with a 😬 emoji. Alongside the announcement, Google shared insights into its design process, noting that transitioning from 2D to 3D illustrations introduces new challenges, such as deciding whether a smiling face is a sphere, a mask, or a flat disc.
Google representatives emphasized that this move is part of an open-source initiative that will allow the community to build original works, from VR experiences to indie apps. While the exact nature of potential VR worlds built with emojis remains unclear, the company hopes creative users will find novel applications for the assets.
