Google Drive can now use Gemini to suggest where your files belong
Google has rolled out an AI-powered organizing tool in Drive that suggests where to move stray files, though it's limited to paying subscribers and won't rename documents.
Anyone whose Google Drive has turned into a dumping ground for documents and photos now has a new option for tidying up. Google began testing a feature called Organize My Files last fall and expanded it to Workspace users in June. The tool relies on Gemini, which looks at how a user's existing folders are structured and suggests where loose files should be moved.
Who can use it
The feature isn't available on free accounts — it requires a Google AI Pro or AI Ultra subscription, or access through a Business, Enterprise or Education plan. Work account holders can't use it to sort personal files, and Gemini only works on private folders, not ones shared with colleagues. Users also need Smart features enabled in Google Workspace, a setting that is turned on by default in most markets.
How it works
From the web version of Google Drive, users open My Drive and click a button to request file-move suggestions. Gemini then displays a list of proposed actions, which can be approved or rejected individually using checkboxes. In some cases, it recommends creating new folders altogether. Hovering over a suggested file shows a preview card before a decision is made.
Notably, Gemini does not rename files, and it does not appear to read document contents when generating suggestions — its recommendations rely mainly on existing file names and folder hierarchy. As a result, the tool works best for people who already follow some kind of naming convention. Those with many untitled files may get little benefit, and might be better off manually renaming and sorting everything first before relying on Gemini going forward.
