Google is expanding its artificial intelligence tools across its services, and now Gmail users can try the new Gmail Live feature. Announced at Google I/O last month, this functionality is now in beta testing.

Gmail Live allows users to search their inbox using voice commands. For example, users can ask about upcoming travel dates or the whereabouts of orders. The feature is currently rolling out to some Android and iOS users before becoming available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers during the summer.

To use Gmail Live, a new icon appears in the search field. Tapping it launches the fullscreen interface with a warning that it's a beta feature. There's also a button to quit and return to the inbox, as well as a microphone mute toggle. According to 9to5Google, there is currently a small waiting period for voice commands to process.

Google plans to bring similar features to other apps, such as Docs Live, which will turn freeform thoughts into a structured document, and Keep Live for note-taking. All these features will initially be exclusive to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, with Google Workspace business customers able to test them in preview.
