Google Pixel phones get a tool for diagnosing Bluetooth problems

Google has rolled out a Bluetooth Diagnostics feature for Pixel phones that helps pinpoint the source of Bluetooth connection issues before users resort to a factory reset. The feature is currently available on Pixel 6 and newer.

Bluetooth connection problems tend to give little indication of what's actually wrong — earbuds may show as connected yet refuse to play music, a car system might play audio fine but not accept calls, or a wearable could keep dropping the connection for no clear reason. Google is now giving Pixel owners a tool to investigate such issues.

The Bluetooth Diagnostics feature lets users test a problematic accessory before resorting to forgetting the device, rebooting everything, and re-pairing from scratch. For now, the feature is limited to Pixel devices — Google lists support starting with Pixel 6, including Fold models.

How it works

Testing on a Pixel 8 Pro, Engadget found Bluetooth Diagnostics under Settings > Connected devices. The phone offers tests for media audio, calls, and other issues. The media test plays a sound and asks whether the user can hear it.

Car connections tend to be where Bluetooth troubleshooting gets especially tricky, since wireless Android Auto relies on both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. That means Bluetooth can be functioning perfectly while Android Auto still fails to work. Bluetooth handles the initial connection and hands-free calls, while Wi-Fi carries most of the data.

Google isn't first to offer this kind of tool — Samsung Members, Samsung's built-in support app for Galaxy devices, already includes individual tests and a broader device-wide diagnostic sweep.

Limitations and privacy

Using the feature is straightforward: open Settings, tap Connected devices, open Bluetooth diagnostics, choose the accessory, and follow the on-screen tests. However, the tool cannot repair a dead earbud, fix faulty accessory firmware, or make incompatible hardware suddenly work together. Google still recommends standard fixes when needed, such as toggling Bluetooth, confirming devices are properly paired, restarting them, and forgetting an accessory before re-pairing it.

Google also notes that if a user chooses to share diagnostics with the company, the shared data can include accessory details, connection-test results, and hardware status. An optional bug report may also include a Bluetooth HCI snoop log containing information such as device names, MAC addresses, and LE Audio reports.
