Gorilla Koga Holds Nurse's Hand During Health Check – Heartwarming Moment Goes Viral
Koga, a 400-pound western lowland gorilla at Buffalo Zoo, reached out and held a veterinary nurse's hand throughout his medical exam, creating an emotional photo that spread across social media.
In a touching display of gentleness, Koga, a western lowland gorilla residing at the Buffalo Zoo in New York, held a nurse's hand during a routine health examination. The gorilla, who weighs approximately 400 pounds (180 kilograms), has lived at the zoo since 2007 and undergoes a comprehensive check-up every two years.
Photographer Christian Dobosiewicz documented the procedure, noting that working with such a powerful animal initially creates tension. Despite his size, Koga extended his arm and gently grasped the hand of a nearby nurse, keeping hold throughout the exam.
The gorilla was sedated to allow veterinarians to safely assess his health, with particular attention given to his heart, as heart disease is a common cause of death in gorillas. The check also included examinations of teeth, eyes, muscles, and joints.
Dobosiewicz captured the moment when Koga's massive hand rested in the human hand, and the photo quickly went viral, touching millions of people worldwide. The photographer remarked that seeing his own hand next to Koga's gave him a deeper appreciation of the animal's strength and size.
Western lowland gorillas are critically endangered, with their numbers declining sharply over the past 25 years due to poaching, habitat loss, and disease. Zoos play a vital role in conservation through regular health checks and breeding programs.
Fortunately, Koga's examination went smoothly, with no complications detected. He remains healthy and lively.
