Gorkšs to meet Unity deputies on Wednesday; government to decide on his appointment later

The Latvian government will not decide at its next sitting on appointing Kaspars Gorkšs as director of the State Chancellery, the institution that serves the Cabinet of Ministers and supports the government's work. Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs of the United List (AS) told journalists this after a coalition meeting.

According to the premier, the matter is being postponed because the New Unity (JV) faction in the Saeima, Latvia's parliament, wants to hear the candidate's own vision before a decision is made. Deputies are interested in his views on several topics: reforms of public administration, the involvement of civil society, and the management of state spending.

As the headline of the report states, Gorkšs will meet New Unity deputies on Wednesday. After that meeting the government is to return to the question of his appointment, although the source does not say when this will happen.

The decision on who will head the State Chancellery is therefore being taken in two steps. First, coalition parties want clarity on the candidate's position, and only then will the government decide on the appointment.
