Granola, a company known for its meeting notetaking app, launched a dictation, or voice typing, feature on October 29. The move puts it in competition with Wispr, the maker of a dictation tool, which released a meeting notetaker several months ago. The two products are growing more alike, a sign that features are starting to overlap in the consumer voice AI market.

Granola's dictation currently works on Mac computers, much like other tools of this kind. A user presses the "Fn" key and starts speaking, and the tool cleans up and formats the speech before inserting the final text. The feature works in all apps, so it can be used to write notes, dictate prompts for AI tools, and reply to emails and messages. Granola says the word count is unlimited and the feature is free.

The company said dictation will arrive on iOS and Windows soon.

Different directions

Granola is valued at $1.5 billion and Wispr at $2 billion. Granola concentrates on meeting-related automation and note-taking. Wispr, meanwhile, is trying to build its own models through a research lab that explores different human-computer interfaces.

A wider trend

The merging of features is not limited to these two companies. Other voice startups, including Fireflies, Speechify and Monologue, have also become multi-feature apps that combine meeting notes and dictation. Until earlier this year, the prevailing approach was a focused app that does one thing well. Now these companies are looking for ways to get more out of capturing users' speech.
