Band “Neīstā Atraitne” Releases Debut Single Written for a Crime Novel
The Latvian band “Neīstā Atraitne” has created three pieces of music with writer Helmuts Bēķis for his novel “Cūcība Ķemeros”. The first, the six-minute “Melu taure”, is the band’s first official single.
The Latvian band “Neīstā Atraitne” and writer Helmuts Bēķis have prepared a music project tied to Bēķis’s new crime novel “Cūcība Ķemeros” (roughly, “Mischief in Ķemeri”). Three pieces came out of the collaboration, and the first of them, the six-minute “Melu taure”, is being released as the band’s first official single. A soundtrack is usually associated with film, but this time it was written for a book.
About the single
The lyrics were written by Bēķis himself, while the music was composed by Matīss Purmalis, the band’s guitarist and vocalist. The composition is built as a theatrical story told through music, leaving room for words, atmosphere and the time needed to tell the tale.
The novel
The events of “Cūcība Ķemeros” begin on New Year’s night near the Ķemeri sanatorium. A discovery made by four friends draws them into a chain of secrets and suspicious coincidences. The crime plot is intertwined with dark humour and relationships in which everyone has something to hide.
First live performance
All three pieces will be performed live in public for the first time on 29 October at 19:00 at the cultural space “Raa Space”, Matīsa iela 8, Riga, at the launch event for the novel. Bēķis will take part, and “Neīstā Atraitne” will perform, including a live version of the debut single “Melu taure”. Admission is free.
About the band
“Neīstā Atraitne” was founded in spring 2024. Since then it has played in pubs, cultural venues, churches and even a prison. The band describes itself as a group that does not try to please but hits the mark.
