Rockstar Games is releasing the physical edition of Grand Theft Auto VI for $80, but players will only get a box containing a digital code — no disc. This price matches the digital version, which has already sparked debate as players are still adjusting to the $70 standard for AAA games.

Price increases are not unprecedented: Nintendo set Mario Kart World at $80 in 2025, and Xbox briefly considered a similar move. However, Rockstar's decision is seen as a turning point that could open the floodgates for more $80 AAA titles.

The concept of a physical edition with only a code symbolizes that players do not truly own their purchased games. The article recalls that digital rights management (DRM) sparked protests in the 2000s, but the expansion of broadband internet and convenience led consumers to accept it. Today, platforms like Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox control game libraries, and publishers can revoke or alter games at any time.

Consumer advocacy continues. The "Stop Killing Games" movement fights against publishers removing titles from libraries, while GOG remains DRM-free and launched a Preservation Program in 2024, already restoring 300 classic games.

The GTA VI physical edition without physical media is another example of the AAA industry raising prices and tightening control over consumers. The article concludes that such practices are becoming more pronounced.
