GTA VI physical edition won't include a disc – only a download code

Rockstar Games has confirmed that the physical version of Grand Theft Auto VI will not contain a disc, only a download code inside the box, raising concerns about the future of physical games.

Rockstar Games has finally announced the price of the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI: $79.99. However, the company also confirmed that the physical versions of GTA VI will not include a disc – instead, the box will contain only a download code. This decision is disappointing for physical game enthusiasts and, given the scale of the next GTA, could set a worrying precedent for the rest of the industry.

Digital games have long overtaken physical sales. Capcom, for instance, recently reported that 93% of its games were sold digitally in its last fiscal year. Devices like the PlayStation Pro, Xbox Series S, and Steam Machine lack a disc drive entirely.

Buying digital offers many advantages: you can start a download from your couch, store multiple games on one hard drive, and storefronts like Steam never run out of stock. However, digital ownership also has significant downsides. If a game is removed from a storefront (due to licensing, limited availability, or store closure), finding a physical copy becomes the only option. If your account is banned unjustly, you could lose access to your entire digital library. Digital games cannot be sold or traded, and they are harder to preserve for future generations.

Rockstar did not comment on why it chose this approach. Speculation includes preventing leaks – a digital-only release ensures the game unlocks simultaneously worldwide. Another reason could be the game's massive file size, which might exceed disc capacity.

This code-in-a-box strategy isn't entirely new. Bethesda used it for Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition and Skyrim Anniversary on Nintendo Switch 2. However, Nintendo's game-key cards are not tied to an account, allowing sharing. With GTA VI, everyone must buy their own copy. Given that GTA VI is so big it is altering the entire 2026 release calendar, Rockstar's decision could embolden other publishers to follow suit, making an already fragile medium even harder to share and preserve.
