GTA VI's new extended look feels more like a movie than a game trailer

Rockstar Games chose to premiere its latest and most extensive "Grand Theft Auto VI" preview on Netflix rather than releasing it straight to YouTube. The choice seems deliberate — the nearly 27-minute video plays more like a slice of a prestige crime drama than a conventional video game trailer.

This reflects a broader trend of the line between Hollywood and video games continuing to blur. This year's James Bond game, "007 First Light," offered a similar cinematic pace and acting quality, while movies and TV shows increasingly draw inspiration from games.

What the preview shows

Rockstar is still keeping plot details under wraps, but the video reveals the broad strokes: GTA VI follows two protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, working together in Vice City. The tightly edited footage cuts between cutscenes and actual gameplay, showing the pair evading police, pulling off high-stakes robberies, and getting into gunfights, alongside quieter moments like chatting in the car or arguing about what to wear.

Unlike typical gameplay demonstrations that show one continuous playthrough, this video artistically jumps between storylines and characters to build a broader picture of the world and its people.

Gameplay mechanics take a back seat

Several outlets given closer access to the game have reported on its expansive map, a six-star wanted system, escalating requirements for stealing cars, and more reactive non-player characters. But the extended-look video itself emphasizes story and atmosphere over mechanics.

Expectations for the game are notably high — its predecessor, GTA V, released 13 years ago, has sold more than 230 million copies, making it one of the best-selling games in history. Previous GTA VI trailers have also drawn hundreds of millions of views. The game is set to launch on November 19th.
