Harry Styles Debuts Song Dedicated to Late Liam Payne at New York Concert
British singer Harry Styles performed the unreleased song "What Is Enough" for the first time at a New York concert, written in memory of his former bandmate Liam Payne. The show fell on the second anniversary of Payne's death.
British pop singer Harry Styles performed a previously unreleased song, "What Is Enough", in public for the first time on Friday, 16 October, at Madison Square Garden in New York. The song is dedicated to his former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne, who died exactly two years earlier. Styles spoke about loss and urged the audience to look after one another.
Words before the performance
Before playing, the musician said that his life includes many friends and colleagues without whom he could not have achieved what he has, and that two years ago on that date he lost one of them. Styles suggested that many people in the audience might have experienced a similar loss. He said he wrote the song for his friend about two years ago and asked the crowd whether they would mind if he played it.
The song deals with the pain of losing someone close and with words that can no longer be said. It also refers to the friend's funeral and to memories of him.
Liam Payne's death
Payne died on 16 October 2024, aged 31, after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. A farewell ceremony took place in the United Kingdom on 20 November.
Payne and Styles rose to fame in One Direction, a group formed in 2010 on the talent show The X Factor. The line-up also included Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik. After Payne's death, the former bandmates released a joint statement expressing deep sadness.
Styles has spoken openly before about how hard it has been to come to terms with the loss. In an interview this year, he said it was especially difficult to grieve personally while millions of other people were publicly mourning too. He remembered Payne as a person with a very kind heart who sincerely wanted to succeed and to make others happy.
