Honda reportedly reviving Element as affordable hybrid
Honda may bring back the boxy Element as a compact hybrid in 2029 to compete with the Ford Bronco Sport, targeting 100,000 annual sales.

Honda Eyes Element Revival
According to a report from Automotive News, Honda is considering reviving its boxy mini SUV, the Element, as an affordable hybrid vehicle. The new model could debut in 2029 and would take on the Ford Bronco Sport. The compact hybrid SUV would sit between the HR-V and CR-V in Honda's lineup; the CR-V is already offered as a hybrid.
The move comes amid growing popularity of smaller, off-road-capable vehicles like the Bronco. Honda currently offers TrailSport trims for the CR-V and Passport, as well as rugged versions of the Pilot and Ridgeline.
Production and Sales Targets
According to the report, Honda plans to build the hybrid Element at its Ohio factory and hopes to sell about 100,000 units in the first full year of sales. The original Element was discontinued in 2011 after years of declining sales, but it developed a cult following and is still commonly spotted on roads.
The Element's interior lacked carpeting (except for the SC trim), making it easy to clean. The rear seats could be folded flat for camping, folded against the sides for hauling small loads, or removed entirely. This versatile setup made it suitable for various tasks.
Pricing and Official Stance
If the hybrid Element is positioned between the HR-V and CR-V, its starting price could be in the $30,000–$35,000 range. The news is particularly welcome for U.S. buyers, as Honda unveiled three new EVs late last year but none were destined for the States.
Engadget reached out to Honda for comment. A company spokesperson stated: "The Honda Element has maintained a cult following since it was discontinued in 2011, and hopes for its possible return continue to circulate online. We sincerely appreciate the enthusiasm for the Element, but we are not going to engage in speculation about our future product plans."
