Honor reportedly testing up to 15,000 mAh smartphone batteries

Smartphone maker Honor is reportedly experimenting with 14,000–15,000 mAh batteries, aiming for a phone that lasts about a week on one charge. The company has not confirmed the information.

Smartphone manufacturer Honor is reportedly testing batteries with a capacity of 14,000 to as much as 15,000 mAh, according to unofficial reports. That is considerably more than is common in smartphones today, and the stated goal is a device that could run for roughly a week on a single charge. The information comes from the industry news source "Digital Chat Station"; the company itself has not officially confirmed it.

The source suggests that such battery life would be especially appealing to travellers, people who work outdoors and demanding users.

Earlier models

Honor has been moving toward large-capacity batteries for some time. Late last year it launched the "Win" with a 10,000 mAh battery, followed in June by the "Honor X80 Pro Max" with 11,000 mAh. The manufacturer also recently announced the "Win RT 2" and "Win Turbo 2", which carry a 12,070 mAh battery. The "Win RT 2" additionally supports fast 90W wired charging.

Engineering challenges

Raising capacity to 15,000 mAh creates serious engineering problems. Batteries this large inevitably add thickness and weight to a phone, and they complicate cooling and heat dissipation.

It is not yet known what solutions Honor intends to use to overcome these obstacles, or when such a device might reach retail. The information should therefore be treated with caution.
