Estonia ready to close Russian border immediately if Moscow orders mobilization
Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal said the government is prepared to close the border with Russia without delay if Russia declares general mobilization. Such a move would be treated as a change in the security threat assessment.
Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal, speaking at a press conference alongside Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, said the government is ready to close the border with Russia immediately if the threat assessment changes, including in the event Russia declares mobilization.
Michal stressed that Estonia continuously monitors the situation in Russia. Tsahkna commented on a document titled about Russian Federation mobilization that had appeared in the government's document registry, noting that the security cabinet regularly discusses various scenarios in case Russia — Estonia's main or even sole real source of security threat — takes certain actions. In his view, a declaration of general mobilization would be a significant step that would increase internal tension inside Russia.
Michal noted that Russia's economy has no healthy sector left and that 30,000 to 40,000 men are killed or wounded there every month. He said Russia will eventually have to take further steps to continue the war, and that NATO and European Union countries must be prepared for such moves.
The prime minister explained that border measures depend on the threat assessment — the border can be closed immediately, as has already happened when disturbances occurred at border crossing points. The Police and Border Guard Board and the interior minister are aware of this, and authorities can close border crossings very quickly. Decisions concerning the border always follow the principle of reciprocity.
Border crossing points already operate on reduced hours, and full customs control has been introduced. So far, initiatives to fully close Estonia's border with Russia have not found sufficient support domestically. Finland, by contrast, closed its land borders with Russia indefinitely at the end of 2023, citing Russian-induced migration pressure. On August 13, Estonia's government approved the Interior Ministry's proposal to indefinitely extend the 12-hour operating regime for vehicle border crossing points with Russia.
