Estonia to Host New British Contingent Tailored to Battlefield Needs
From 2027, the British force in Estonia will be expanded and restructured, replacing heavy armor with lighter, more mobile units equipped with 250 km-range drones and artificial intelligence, drawing on lessons from the Ukraine war.

Estonia will receive a reinforced British military presence from 2027, with an additional 300 troops bringing the total contingent to around 1,200. The deployment will include drones with a range of up to 250 kilometers and the Asgard artificial intelligence network, reflecting doctrinal changes based on the Ukraine war.
Current heavy armor, including Challenger 2 main battle tanks, will be replaced by lighter, more mobile units capable of rapid movement and splitting into smaller components on the battlefield. The British Army already operates M-270 multiple rocket launchers and Swedish-made Archer howitzers in Estonia. Two new drone systems – DART (adopted in 2025) and NYAN (adopted in 2026) – will be added, both with a 250 km range and similar payload capacity for semi-deep strikes.
The Asgard AI system integrates sensors (drones, personnel, aircraft), AI-based decision-making, and weapon systems to enable extremely fast battlefield responses. The UK's high-readiness 4th Brigade is being restructured into an anti-tank brigade, and its units will exercise in Estonia from 2027.
UK Defense Secretary Dan Jarvis and Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur signed a new bilateral defense cooperation agreement. The UK will begin pre-positioning equipment and ammunition this year to enable faster brigade-level response in a crisis. Pevkur said the deployment demonstrates the UK's long-term commitment to Estonia's security, though Estonia's security agencies currently see no acute Russian military threat despite warnings from Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland.
The new contingent is expected to arrive in Estonia in April 2027.
