The NATO military contingent in Estonia will increase next year following the rotation of a British unit. The new UK land forces unit will be larger in numbers and its armament will include unmanned aerial vehicles.

The British contingent forms the core of Allied forces stationed in Estonia. An agreement signed on 16 July by Defense Ministers Hanno Pevkur and Dan Jarvis provides for the modification and expansion of this contingent by approximately 300 troops, bringing the total to nearly 1,200.

Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur stated that the additional personnel will bring new long-range capabilities, particularly drones. Marek Kohv, a research fellow at the Centre for Defence Studies, explained that the entire concept of the British military mission in Estonia will change. Instead of a contingent relying on armored vehicles, a highly mobile formation tailored to Estonian conditions will be established, capable of splitting into several independently operating small units if needed.

British tanks currently stationed in Tapa are likely to be withdrawn, but light armored vehicles and other equipment will remain and be supplemented. Kohv noted that the unit will retain its artillery and short-range air defense capabilities, and additionally, two types of drones adopted in 2023 and 2024, with a range of up to 250 kilometers, will be brought to Estonia.

Pre-positioning of equipment and ammunition for the new contingent will begin this year. Next year, the UK's 4th Brigade will also conduct exercises in Estonia, which under NATO scenarios must be ready for rapid deployment in the event of a crisis or conflict.
