An auction in Estonia has sold 89 of 100 artworks created by Estonian artists to mark the centenary of the first volume of "Truth and Justice," a novel by the classic author Anton Hansen Tammsaare. The sale took place on 30 October on the online platform of the Vaal gallery and was considered a success: all the exclusive editions of the novel, whose covers feature reproductions of these works, were sold as well.

The idea came from Maarja Vaino, director of the Tallinn Literature Centre. The auction offered one hundred works by Estonian artists, along with 95 books issued in a single copy each. The cover of every book was decorated with a reproduction of one of the artworks. The remaining five books, chosen by lot, were given to the National Library of Estonia.

Prices and interest

More than 2,100 bids were submitted for the auction. The drawings sold for prices ranging from 350 to 10,800 euros. The exclusive copies of the novel's first volume with reproductions on the cover went for between 50 and 410 euros.

The source does not say how much the auction raised in total or what the proceeds are intended for.
