This summer, ten sheep grazed on the hills near the ruins of the medieval castle in Viljandi, a town in Estonia. Three of them died, and the causes are unknown, the local newspaper Sakala reports.

The animals' owner, Marju Mets, would like to bring sheep to the town again next summer, but is now thinking about how to ensure their safety.

What happened

According to Mets, one sheep was found dead on 8 July and another on 20 August. She said this seemed strange, as the animal had been perfectly lively and healthy the day before. Two days later she was told that yet another sheep had died.

A possible explanation

Mets suggested that people may have fed the sheep something unsuitable. In her words, giving an animal a whole loaf of bread or a baguette can upset its digestion.

Next year, she said, she will probably have to choose shyer animals that will not take food from the hands of every passer-by.
