Estonia Sails to Prestigious SSL Gold Cup Finals in Rio de Janeiro
Estonia's sailing team 'Icebreakers' has qualified for the 2026 Star Sailors League (SSL) Gold Cup finals by winning their European qualification group in Switzerland.

Estonia's national sailing team, known as the Icebreakers, has secured a spot at the SSL Gold Cup 2026 finals in Rio de Janeiro after triumphing in European qualification Group D on Lake Neuchâtel, Switzerland.
Team captain Karl-Hannes Tagu expressed considerable relief after the event, noting the long wait for wind. The team displayed strong speed in windy conditions, winning their opening race against neighboring Austria. On the second day, they added another race victory and a second-place finish, accumulating eight points to top Group D.
The following two days saw no racing due to unsuitable wind conditions, meaning Estonia won the group by default, ahead of Austria (six points) and Slovenia (four points).
Besides Tagu, Team Estonia consisted of Mati Sepp, Maris Seersant, Karl Kolk, Janno Hool, Jasper Rufus Rytövaara, Kevin-Melvin Aasav and Taavi-Valter Taveter. They are set to return to their regular sailing projects, with plans to regroup as a team in the autumn.
The SSL Gold Cup is an international national-team sailing competition featuring 66 countries. Lithuania, another Baltic state, has also qualified from the European countries. The finals are scheduled for December 2026 in Rio.
