Estonian hospital mistakenly declares living man dead
An Estonian entrepreneur discovered he had been mistakenly registered as deceased in state systems after visiting a North Estonia regional hospital's emergency department, losing access to his bank accounts and e-services as a result. The error occurred after he walked out of the hospital on his own two feet.
Kristers Vīrsārs, a 37-year-old Estonian entrepreneur with a background in IT and education, visited the emergency department of a North Estonia regional hospital last week. According to his own account, he spent about three and a half hours there — from around 11:30 in the morning until 3 p.m. — and received very good care. At the end of the visit, he was allowed to walk to a taxi on his own and go home.
However, the very next morning he ran into baffling problems. None of his bank cards worked anymore, he could not add payment methods to various services, and when trying to pay for fuel at a petrol station, he discovered that all his accounts and cards had been blocked. The widely used electronic identification and authentication tool "Mobile-ID" also stopped functioning for him.
It turned out the cause of these problems was incorrect information in state systems — Vīrsārs had been officially registered as deceased, even though he was in fact perfectly healthy and had left the hospital under his own power. The error effectively cut off his access to financial services and government e-services, which in Estonia rely heavily on digital identification.
The case illustrates how much everyday life in a highly digitalized society — from using bank accounts to buying fuel — depends on accurate data exchange between various state and private-sector systems, and how serious the consequences of even a single administrative error can be.
