Martin Roger, Political Director of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, visited Baku on June 11 for political consultations with Azerbaijani counterparts. He met with Deputy Foreign Minister Fariz Rzayev, Presidential Advisor on Foreign Policy and Security Hikmat Hajiyev, and Deputy Defense Minister Agil Gurbanov.

According to the Estonian Foreign Ministry, a key topic was the development of political and economic cooperation. Roger noted that interaction in education, culture, digital technologies, and the economy has expanded significantly in recent years. Estonia is interested in further strengthening business ties and expanding opportunities for Estonian companies in the Azerbaijani market.

The parties also discussed Azerbaijan's relations with the European Union. Estonia views Azerbaijan as an important EU partner, especially in energy and transport connectivity.

Special attention was paid to Russia's war in Ukraine. Roger stated that Moscow's actions do not indicate a desire for peace, and the international community must continue supporting Ukraine and increasing pressure on Russia to achieve a just and sustainable peace.

The consultations also covered the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The Estonian representative welcomed the steps taken by both countries to normalize relations and strengthen regional stability. Estonia consistently supports the territorial integrity of both Azerbaijan and Armenia and hopes for further progress in talks.

Earlier, Rus.ERR reported that President Alar Karis on June 11 signed a decree appointing diplomat Tiina Nirk as Estonia's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Azerbaijan. She will become the first Estonian ambassador to be permanently based in Baku. Previously, diplomatic relations with Azerbaijan were handled through the Estonian embassy in Turkey. The decision to open an embassy in Baku was made last year. In addition to Azerbaijan, Estonia plans to open new diplomatic missions in Kenya, Brazil, Armenia, and Moldova in 2026.
