Thieves stole side mirrors from a number of cars parked in apartment-block courtyards in Ikšķile and Ogre, towns near Riga in Latvia, overnight into Monday. The news outlet "Degpunktā" reported the incident. Many residents were affected, as vehicles of various makes and ages were left without the parts.
Eyewitness account
Ikšķile resident Jānis noticed two suspicious men at about 4:00 a.m. Worried about his cars, he went outside, but the strangers had already gone and his own mirrors were untouched. He notified the municipal police and then looked through the footage from his car's dashcam. There, another resident approached him, saying he had also seen two men sneaking around the vehicles. According to this man, a passing car had scared the pair off before Jānis arrived.
Jānis later went to the State Police as well and was most likely the first to report the suspicious activity.
Reports rose in the morning
Most victims noticed the damage only in the morning. The number of complaints grew at around 7:00 a.m., when people were getting ready for the first trip of the working week.
Given the scale and the skill of the thefts, residents doubt it was a prank by young people. Jānis suggests the job was carried out cleanly and that the thieves were not amateurs who would leave fingerprints. The source gives no information about any detainees or the exact number of victims.
