Initiative to make August 15 a public holiday in Latvia gathers under 800 signatures

An initiative registered on the public petition platform Manabalss.lv, proposing that August 15 become an official public holiday in Latvia, has so far collected fewer than 800 signatures over more than a year. Lauris Baurovskis is listed as the initiative’s representative.

He explains that on August 15, Christian communities around the world celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, commemorating Mary’s assumption into heaven and her special place in the history of faith. In his view, introducing an official holiday would promote spiritual culture and heritage preservation, strengthen local society, and help bring silence, gratitude and compassion back into everyday life. He notes that many European countries already observe this day as a public holiday, and it could become a time for reflection and thanksgiving in Latvia.

The author of the initiative also stresses the feast’s symbolic connection to motherhood, family warmth and care. A day off would allow families to spend time together in the middle of summer, when children are still at home. He suggests the day could develop into a regional celebration featuring processions, concerts, community services and cultural events. He points to the living traditions of Marian veneration in Latvia, including in Aglona, Liepāja and Riga, and argues that a holiday would help preserve sacred culture, songs, processions and art. It could also boost domestic tourism to holy sites and benefit local hotels, caterers and other businesses.

Meanwhile, the Latvian Roman Catholic Church has announced that this year, as usual, hundreds of pilgrims will gather at Aglona Basilica in mid-August to celebrate the Assumption. Spiritual preparation will begin on August 11 with special services, and the basilica will particularly welcome believers who cannot attend the main celebrations on August 14 and 15.
