iOS 27 to let two iPhones share a single phone number

Apple's upcoming iOS 27 update is set to introduce iPhone Handoff, a feature that lets users switch between two iPhones while keeping the same phone number. The update is expected to roll out later this month.

Apple's next mobile operating system, iOS 27, due for release later this month, will include a new feature called iPhone Handoff. It allows a single phone number to be used across two separate iPhones, letting owners switch between the devices as needed.

The feature was briefly referenced during the WWDC keynote in June, though no further details were shared at the time. A demo clip has now surfaced showing how the feature is configured through Device Hub in Xcode 27. The setup process involves pairing two iPhones, designating one as the primary device and the other as a "companion."

Timed with the foldable iPhone

The timing of the feature's launch appears linked to the anticipated release of the foldable iPhone Ultra. Given that a large, expensive foldable device isn't always practical to carry around, Handoff would let users temporarily switch to a smaller, cheaper phone — such as an older, cracked iPhone 13 that hasn't yet been replaced.

Carrier support required

The feature will depend on support from mobile carriers. References to T-Mobile US and Telekom.de have been found within the code, but it remains unclear which other carriers, if any, will support the feature.
