Late drama shatters Iran's World Cup knockout dream again

Iran's quest for a first-ever World Cup knockout appearance ended in dramatic fashion on Saturday, as Austria's stoppage-time equalizer against Algeria dashed the Iranians' hopes of advancing as one of the best third-placed teams.

Amir Ghalenoei's side finished their Group G campaign with a 1-1 draw against Egypt on Friday, leaving them needing other results to go their way. The draw left Iran with three points, and for a brief moment on Saturday, it seemed they might squeeze through when Algeria took a 3-2 lead over Austria in stoppage time. However, Austria struck back with almost the final kick of the game, securing a 3-3 draw that sent both Austria and Algeria through and eliminated Iran.

Earlier, Iran had been dealt a major blow when a stoppage-time winner against Egypt was ruled out for offside after a VAR check. That left them relying on other results, but ultimately it was not enough.

Iran leave the tournament unbeaten, with draws against Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt. However, their campaign was overshadowed by off-field issues. Due to visa uncertainties and tensions between the US and Iran, the team had to commute from their base in co-host Mexico for their three group games in the United States. US authorities required them to enter within 24 hours of a match and leave the same day, though restrictions were slightly eased for their final game in Seattle, where they were allowed to arrive two days early.

Captain Mehdi Taremi described the situation as a logistical "disaster" and questioned whether his team was truly welcome. "Who wants to help us? If they want us to be out, OK, let's be out. But that's not fair," Taremi said. Coach Ghalenoei said his team was being "oppressed."

The fine margins of football were cruel to Iran. Had Taremi scored a first-half penalty against Egypt or hit the net with his header instead of the crossbar, history might have been different. Instead, Iran's seventh World Cup appearance ended without a knockout berth once again.
