First trailer arrives for Nicolas Cage's biopic about football legend John Madden

A first trailer has been released for "Madden," David O. Russell's biographical film about legendary American football coach John Madden. Nicolas Cage takes on the lead role, wearing a wig and prosthetic makeup for a characteristically flamboyant, larger-than-life performance.

The trailer traces Madden's career arc, from his coaching years, cut short by health problems, through his subsequent career as a broadcaster and later his connection to the video game franchise that carries his name and is best known to younger audiences. Comedian John Mulaney appears as EA founder Trip Hawkins, pitching a video game concept to Madden with exaggerated startup-founder enthusiasm. The film depicts how Madden's own feedback shaped the first Madden NFL game, including his rejection of Hawkins's proposal for a seven-on-seven format, insisting a football team fields eleven players.

Christian Bale plays Raiders owner Al Davis in a far more restrained style than Cage's over-the-top Madden. Davis and Madden partnered to win the Super Bowl together in 1977. The cast also includes Kathryn Hahn as Madden's wife, Virginia, and Sienna Miller as Davis's wife, Carol.

"Madden" opens in theaters on November 11 and arrives on Prime Video on November 18.
