Israel and Morocco agree to upgrade ties to embassy level after New York meeting
Israel and Morocco agreed on Wednesday in New York to raise their diplomatic missions to embassy level and appoint ambassadors, though no timeline was given. A similar pledge was made back in 2022.
Israel and Morocco have agreed to establish embassies on each other's territory, following a meeting on Wednesday in New York between senior diplomats from both countries and the US ambassador to the United Nations.
The two nations first established diplomatic relations in 2020 under the US-brokered Abraham Accords, through which several Arab states normalized ties with Israel.
Commitments reaffirmed
Following the meeting, Israel's foreign ministry stated that both sides reaffirmed their commitment to upgrading diplomatic relations, elevating their respective missions to full embassy status, and appointing ambassadors. The US mission to the UN also released a joint statement on behalf of all three parties, expressing the belief that full diplomatic, peaceful and friendly relations between Morocco and Israel serve the common interest of both nations and would help advance regional peace.
Neither statement specified a timeframe for when the embassies would actually open. Notably, a similar announcement had already been made in June 2022, during a visit to Morocco by then-Israeli foreign minister Yair Lapid.
What comes next
The two countries also indicated that a series of economic agreements between them are expected to be finalized before the end of the year. Israel's statement further noted that reciprocal high-level visits between the two countries would take place in the coming months.
