Latvia's Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, together with the State Fire and Rescue Service, has issued a red alert — the highest level of weather warning — for Riga, Jelgava and the Vidzeme coast of the Gulf of Riga. The warning is in effect from 9:00 on Saturday until 2:00 on Sunday, though the affected area may change as new data comes in.

Possible risks

Officials warn that extremely heavy rain could flood large areas, damage property and transport infrastructure, and destroy crop fields and gardens. In some places roads may become impassable. There is also a high risk of disruptions to electricity and water supply as well as telecommunications. Residents in threatened areas are urged to leave and follow instructions from responsible authorities.

The forecast has already led to the cancellation of several outdoor events across the country. Alongside the rain, strong wind is also expected over the day, gradually intensifying and reaching 25-30 meters per second along the coast by evening — meaning the wind warning for central Latvia could also be raised to red level. Air temperatures nationwide will not exceed +16 to +18 degrees, though some southern areas of Latgale may see slightly warmer conditions. Weather is expected to ease only in the latter half of the night into Sunday.

Advice for residents

The State Fire and Rescue Service urges people to stay indoors where possible and take special care of children, seniors and people with limited mobility. Before the storm hits, residents should close windows, doors and attic hatches, secure or bring indoors items from balconies and yards, and avoid parking cars under trees, near scaffolding or power lines. During heavy rain, people should avoid crossing flooded roads or areas, and those in flood-risk zones should move valuables to safer locations in advance. Residents are also advised to charge their phones and prepare alternative lighting in case of power outages. In emergencies, people should call 112.
