Over the past weekend, the Southern Zemgale unit of the State Police's Zemgale regional department carried out a preventive raid on the Lielupe and Driksa rivers to check compliance with safety and traffic rules among watercraft operators.

During the raid, officers inspected 32 watercraft in total and identified five violations, for which administrative offence reports were drawn up under the Maritime Administration and Marine Safety Law.

Missing registration documents

In three cases, operators were unable to present documents confirming their vessel's registration. The law provides for a warning or a fine of 10 to 50 euros for this offence; in all three cases, police issued a warning. Two of these violations were recorded in Salgale parish, Jelgava municipality, on the Lielupe, and one in Jelgava, on the Driksa.

Driving without a licence

In two other cases, operators were driving watercraft without being licensed to do so at all. This offence carries a fine of 100 to 250 euros along with a two-year suspension of the right to operate a recreational vessel. Both offenders received a 100-euro fine and were barred from obtaining a recreational vessel licence for two years.

Call for responsibility

The State Police reminded the public that safety requirements apply not only to swimmers but also to operators of jet skis, motorboats and other watercraft. Safety is especially important when children are aboard — they must wear a properly fitted life jacket of the correct size. Operating a watercraft while under the influence of alcohol is prohibited.

During the warm season, police continue monitoring bodies of water, focusing on operating licences and possible alcohol use. Additionally, from May to October, the Jelgava municipal police also monitor watercraft traffic on the Lielupe and Driksa rivers.
