Free AI Tool 'rakstiviegli.lv' Created for Converting Texts into Plain Language

Digital accessibility expert Pēteris Jurčenko, together with his team, has developed a new free tool called “rakstiviegli.lv” that uses artificial intelligence to convert complex texts into plain language. The platform is intended for content creators who want to make information more accessible to everyone.

The tool can be particularly useful for businesses, state and local government institutions, non-governmental organizations, and individuals subject to the Accessibility of Goods and Services Act adopted last year. The “rakstiviegli.lv” platform is a continuation of an earlier initiative “lasiviegli.lv,” which published political parties' pre-election programs in plain language.

Jurčenko explains that the tool can be used for various purposes – for example, explaining instructions and contract terms, simplifying letters written in a foreign language, or converting political parties' promises into a more understandable format. The platform also offers the option to have the text reviewed by a human or to conduct a comprehensibility test.

Unlike general-purpose AI chatbots, “rakstiviegli.lv” is a specialized solution that was customized and tested during development to ensure that the generated text meets level three of plain language. At this level, information is adapted to be understood by as many people as possible, including those with intellectual disabilities, learning difficulties, or limited language skills.

Before the platform's development, a study was conducted on the impact of artificial intelligence on accessibility. As a result, a specific approach was developed that defines the prerequisites for effective and ethical use of AI, as well as the human role in such a system. The converted text can be immediately copied for use on a website or downloaded in DOCX format.

Plain language is particularly important for seniors, people with reading difficulties, intellectual disabilities, and those whose native language is not Latvian. It can also help anyone who wants to grasp complex content faster and more easily.

Pēteris Jurčenko has been working in digital accessibility for over 15 years. Under his leadership, platforms such as “lasiviegli.lv,” “titri.lv,” and “scooliowp.lv” have also been created. Jurčenko is the chairman of the board of the Latvian Open Technology Association.
