New Coloring Book Introduces Children to Suiti Dialect Words
The association "Suitu kultūras mantojums" has published a coloring book titled "Anniņa ar Miķelīti iepazīst suitu sētas" with texts in standard Latvian and the Livonian dialect of Kurzeme. A free workshop on July 31 at H. Dorbes Museum in Ventspils will let children discover dialect words like plieders, zustrens, and ķezbers.
The association "Suitu kultūras mantojums" has released an educational coloring book aimed at preserving and promoting the Suiti cultural heritage and dialect. The book, "Anniņa ar Miķelīti iepazīst suitu sētas", features illustrations by artist Agnese Rudzīte and presents texts in both standard literary Latvian and the Livonian dialect's shallow Kurzeme subdialect.
The publication highlights the unique vocabulary still used by older generations in Ventspils and Ventspils district, including words such as "plieders", "zustrens", "pucens", and "ķezbers". It also poses questions about local names for sea creatures, like whether it is ērcs or plekst, stiķen or angers.
To engage the younger generation, a free event will take place on July 31 at 11:00 AM at the H. Dorbes Museum in Ventspils. Participants will explore common linguistic features by coloring activity sheets. Admission is free.
