Portable power station maker Jackery has announced a new model, the Explorer 100D, which is the most compact unit the company has produced so far. It uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which Jackery first introduced in 2023. This chemistry is described as safer and longer-lasting than the more common lithium-ion cells.

Size and output

The Explorer 100D measures 4.6 by 3.4 by 3.4 inches and weighs 1.87 pounds. Its battery holds 96Wh, or 30,000mAh, so it can fit in carry-on luggage and power several devices during a long flight.

The front has two 140W USB-C ports and one 18W USB-A port. Total output is capped at 158W, so the power available to each port drops when all three are in use. The unit has an integrated handle, and a shoulder strap is available as an optional extra.

Lifespan and charging

Jackery says the LFP cells are engineered for up to eight years of regular use, with a lifespan of 3,000 charge cycles. According to The Verge, smaller and cheaper 30,000mAh chargers exist, but this model's cells should outlast competing products that use standard lithium-ion cells.

The station can also be recharged from a solar panel, supporting up to 100W of direct solar input. That can bring it back to 80 percent capacity in about an hour and a half.

Price and availability

The Explorer 100D goes on sale through Walmart from November 15 for $99. It is already available from Costco, but only as a two-pack priced at $179.99.
