New survey on oligarch Aven and Braže's stance raises questions about its sponsor
A public opinion poll about EU-sanctioned Russian oligarch Pyotr Aven and Foreign Minister Baiba Braže's position has sparked debates about the motives of whoever commissioned it.

A new opinion survey focusing on EU-sanctioned Russian oligarch Pyotr Aven and Foreign Minister Baiba Braže's (New Unity) stance has been released in July, with its four questions publicly shared, including by Braže herself. The survey has triggered widespread discussions on social media, with many speculating about its sponsor and whether it is linked to the same circles that previously worked in the oligarch's interests.
Pyotr Aven is under EU sanctions for supporting actions that undermine Ukraine's territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence. He has not publicly condemned Russia's war in Ukraine, yet he frequently appears at Latvian cultural events, such as a performance at the Chekhov Riga Russian Theatre in April, where he was seen kissing the hand of former President Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga.
The first question of the survey asked respondents whether they had heard about discussions regarding the lifting of sanctions against Aven and Braže's position on the matter. The remaining three questions have not been published, but this single question has already raised concerns that the survey might be intended to influence public opinion or pressure politicians.
Analysts note that surveys not only reflect public opinion but also reveal the interests of the client. In this case, the questions appear biased, suggesting that behind the survey could be individuals or groups seeking to shift public attitudes toward Aven or influence Braže's decisions.
