A woman from the Bauska area in Latvia, who was once accused of serious crimes, is now fighting for compensation from the Interior Ministry following the dismissal of all charges. The case highlights the prolonged ordeal she endured due to alleged state misconduct.

The woman underwent a full criminal investigation, including interrogations, searches, trial, appeal, and cassation. During the process, authorities intercepted and recorded 966 of her phone conversations, including calls with her lawyer – a significant breach of legal privilege.

After the serious accusations were finally refuted, the woman initiated legal proceedings against the Interior Ministry, demanding compensation for the harm caused. She maintains that the 15 years of stress and legal battles have severely impacted her health and life.

The case has now reached court, where judges will evaluate whether the state's actions were lawful and determine the appropriate compensation for the intercepted calls and the suffering endured. This is a rare instance where an acquitted person has taken legal action against the state for alleged investigative misconduct.
