New Observation Platform in Muraste Brings Noise, Trash, and Parking Issues to Locals
A new observation platform in Muraste (Harju County) has become a popular tourist attraction within weeks, but local residents complain about chaotic parking, noise, and litter.

The new observation platform in Muraste, Harju County, has quickly become a popular attraction, but with the influx of visitors have come problems. Local residents report chaotic parking, noise, and trash, and believe some of these issues could have been foreseen during the design phase.
According to locals, there used to be an ordinary staircase that was sufficient. Now it is a beautiful, almost touristy spot that draws people from all over the county. Cars are parked behind fences and block driveways, while motorcycles rev loudly. This disturbs residents of both the upper Muraste village and the lower Meriküla.
Mairold Vaik, a resident of Meriküla, said that discussions with the municipality and local associations took place before the opening, but traffic management was insufficiently planned. Narrow village roads make parking difficult; there aren't enough spaces, so cars are left along roads and near paths to the sea.
Interestingly, the municipal government does not consider the structure an observation platform. In an official response, Mayor Erik Sandla stated it is merely a pedestrian connection between two villages. He believes the real use of the facility will best show what additional solutions may be needed. The municipality is prepared to make changes if necessary.
Mirjam Gill, a Muraste resident, said locals do not want to appear envious or grumpy – they also enjoy coming to admire the view. However, she suggested the tower could have been built closer to the village, where there is a beautiful coastal escarpment and a larger area that would avoid parking problems.
The problem five or six years ago was that locals were insufficiently involved in the discussion. There was no thorough conversation about whether the location was chosen correctly. It should be noted that different people were in power then. It remains to be hoped that the current authorities will respond appropriately to the situation.
