New traffic light in Imanta causes major delays: residents report up to an hour longer commutes
A new traffic light on Slokas Street in Imanta, installed as part of a bicycle path project, has led to severe congestion, increasing travel time by 30 minutes to an hour.

A newly installed traffic light in the Imanta neighborhood of Riga has caused significant disruption for motorists. The light, located on Slokas Street, went into operation recently and is linked to a new bicycle path. Residents have taken to social media to express frustration, reporting that their commute home has increased by half an hour to an hour, depending on the time of day.
The traffic light is part of efforts to improve cycling infrastructure, but drivers say it has created unexpected bottlenecks. The program “Obsudim vecherom” (Let’s Discuss in the Evening) reported on the issue, highlighting the impact on daily travel.
As of now, the Riga City Council has not announced any measures to address the situation. Motorists are advised to plan for additional travel time when passing through the intersection until a solution is found.
