A pair of common kestrels (Falco tinnunculus) has successfully nested in a specially installed nest box in Riga, marking the first known instance of the species using such a structure within the city limits. The box, placed on the gable of a warehouse belonging to the company TZMO Latvija near the Lubānas street roundabout, hosted four chicks that hatched in June and were ringed on July 2 by Imants Jakovļevs, a representative of the Latvian Ornithological Society.

The artificial nest was installed on April 22 by birdhouse expert Valdis Zariņš with the help of a climber, following recommendations from ornithologist Agnis Bušs. Activity was observed as early as April 27, and on June 16 four eggs were found. It typically takes kestrels at least a year to occupy artificial nests, making this rapid adoption exceptional.

The common kestrel is listed as a vulnerable species in Latvia's Red Data Book, having declined sharply since the 1960s due to intensive agriculture. It feeds mainly on small rodents and is known for its distinctive hovering flight while hunting.

TZMO Latvija has also installed houses for other birds, bats, and insects on its premises. Technical director Jurģis Priede noted that the initiative demonstrates how business can be combined with biodiversity conservation. Employees have named the four ringed chicks Bella, Mato, Happy, and Seni.
