The news portal "la.lv" has released a new entertainment-style language quiz inviting readers to test their knowledge of Latvian. The quiz is built around ten sentences, each containing hidden errors that participants must find themselves in order to discover just how accurate their sense of the language really is.

Everyday slips versus real mistakes

The introduction to the quiz notes that virtually everyone makes mistakes in everyday communication, but there is a difference between harmless colloquial looseness and more serious violations of language norms. As examples, the piece points to the expressions "pa lielam" and "uz doto brīdi", phrases that noticeably irritate some language users and are seen as classic errors.

Purpose of the quiz

The quiz is designed as a playful way for anyone to check their inner "editor" and see whether their everyday speech matches the standards of literary Latvian. Participants are asked to analyze each of the ten given sentences and try to identify the mistakes within them, afterward finding out just how "crystal clear" their Latvian truly is.
