E-scooter rider flees police at 75 km/h in Jelgava, crashes into car
Police in Jelgava chased an e-scooter rider on Tuesday who reached speeds of 75 km/h while fleeing and repeatedly ran red lights, before crashing into a car and being detained.
Latvia's State Police reported that on Tuesday in Jelgava, an e-scooter rider fleeing officers reached a speed of 75 kilometers per hour during the chase.
How it began
Officers first noticed the rider near the start of Lielā Street, by the Lielupe bridge, traveling at 55 km/h on a scooter that lacked a registration sticker. Under Jelgava municipal rules, e-scooters must slow to no more than 10 km/h on that stretch of Lielā Street, between the Driksa and Lielupe bridges, from Jānis Čakste Boulevard to Brīvības Boulevard.
The chase
The rider initially stopped on Cukura Street, but as soon as the officer stepped out of the patrol car, he sped off. He returned to the Lielupe bridge and headed toward the city center, crossing several intersections against red lights. His speed during the pursuit peaked at 75 km/h.
Outcome
The chase ended on Svētes Street, where the rider crashed into a car and was detained. He reportedly was not under the influence of alcohol. Police say further details will be released on Wednesday.
