Jelgava to issue new-design resident cards and student IDs
Starting in August, Jelgava municipality will issue new resident cards and student IDs; existing cards remain valid until May 2027.

Jelgava City Council has approved new regulations for the city's smart cards. From August, the municipality will begin issuing new-design resident cards and student IDs. Only first-time applicants need to obtain the new cards; existing cards have their validity automatically extended until May 31, 2027.
Benefits remain unchanged: pensioners, politically repressed persons, the poor, and low-income residents can receive 20 free bus rides per month. The student ID allows four free rides per day during the school year. First-time applicants can apply at the Zemgale Regional Competence Development Centre (ZRKAC) at 33 Svētes Street, by prior phone appointment. Applicants must bring an ID; photos are taken on site. Students receive their IDs at their respective schools.
The previous card design was introduced four years ago in cooperation with "Transact Pro," with plans to also function as a payment card, but that feature was never implemented. The new cards are cheaper and provide the necessary functionality.
