Yemen's government has announced the launch of a military operation intended to reclaim territory currently under the control of the Houthi movement.

In a televised address, the head of the government stated that the armed forces have been ordered to restore the official government's control over the entire territory of the country.

Background of a prolonged conflict

Yemen's capital, Sanaa, has been under Houthi control since 2014. The Houthi movement is backed by Iran, and over the years the group has significantly expanded the territory under its control.

The internationally recognized Yemeni government, for its part, relies on support from Saudi Arabia. The newly announced operation marks an attempt to shift the balance of power that has persisted for years in a conflict between the government and the Houthis that has now lasted more than a decade.
