The local government of Jõhvi, a town in northeastern Estonia, has announced an open competition for the post of director of Jõhvi Basic School. Candidates can submit applications until 22 November. The vacancy arose after the previous director resigned, and an acting head is running the school until a permanent director is appointed.
Requirements for candidates
The future head is expected to hold a master's degree or an equivalent qualification, have management experience and speak Estonian at level C1 or higher. Knowledge of English at a level sufficient for communication is also required.
Applicants must submit a three-minute video. In it they should explain why they want to lead the school, what kind of school culture they intend to build and how their previous experience would help the institution develop.
Pay and support
The director's salary will be 3,500 euros gross per month. The new head is also promised support from the rural municipality government, opportunities for professional development and help settling into the role.
Documents, copies of qualification certificates and a link to the video must be sent to johvi@johvi.ee no later than 22 November.
What happened to the previous director
Since 2 November, Rut Opmann has served as acting director of Jõhvi Basic School and will lead it until a permanent director is appointed. The previous director, Anne Endjärv, who had headed the school since summer 2025, submitted her resignation in early October. The competition was originally planned to be announced in early November, so that a new head could, if possible, be found by the start of the third school term.
