How to turn on Android's built-in settings to protect your phone from theft
Google has built an AI-powered Theft Protection suite into Android that automatically locks a phone's screen when it detects signs of theft. Users need only enable the relevant settings on their device.

For years, protecting an Android phone from theft mostly meant reacting after the fact — shielding the screen while entering a PIN, relying on location tracking, and avoiding easily guessed passwords. That has started to change, as Google has combined AI with a built-in Theft Protection suite designed to prevent theft before it happens.
If a phone is grabbed and moved quickly, motion-sensing theft detection can recognize the pattern and lock the screen almost instantly. If a thief instead cuts the connection by removing the SIM card or switching on Airplane Mode, the Offline Device Lock feature starts a countdown and locks the device shortly after. These tools are designed with usage limits and active-use checks to avoid annoying false alarms during normal handling.
Where to find the settings
On any device running Android 10 or later, these protections are bundled into Google Play Services, so no separate app installation is required. However, some budget phones running Android Go Edition, tablets, and devices without the full suite of Google Play Services may lack some or all of these features.
On Samsung phones, the settings are typically found under Settings → Security and Privacy → Lost Device Protection → Theft Protection. On Google Pixel devices, the path is Settings → Security & Privacy → Device Unlock → Theft Protection.
The main feature to enable first is Theft Detection Lock, which responds to sudden or aggressive movement. Next is Offline Device Lock, which keeps the screen protected even if a thief disables mobile data or Wi-Fi. A third option, Remote Lock, can be triggered from any browser by visiting android.com/lock and entering the phone number — it works even if the thief has moved the device onto a different network.
Why a PIN still matters
Google requires a screen lock for these protections to work properly, since Identity Check and other tools depend on it. On Pixel phones and newer Android devices, Identity Check periodically asks for biometric or PIN re-verification, particularly when the phone is away from familiar locations. Samsung Galaxy phones have their own dedicated Theft Protection page that also connects to the company's lost-device tools.
