How to mirror your Android phone screen to a Roku device
This guide explains the process of screen mirroring from Android phones to Roku, highlighting compatibility requirements, step-by-step instructions for Samsung devices, and the use of wireless DeX.
Roku devices allow you to mirror your Android phone's screen, making it possible to view local media, photos, presentations, or participate in video calls on a larger display. This feature relies on the Miracast protocol, which must be supported by both the Roku device and the phone.
Not all Android phones support Miracast natively. Google Pixel phones, for example, use Google Cast and DIAL protocols instead, meaning they cannot mirror the entire screen to a Roku. However, individual apps like YouTube or Netflix that support DIAL may still be cast. Other brands have their own names for similar features: Samsung uses Smart View, LG has Screen Share, and OnePlus offers Screen Projection.
Setting up screen mirroring on Roku
To configure screen mirroring on your Roku, go to the settings menu, then System, then Screen mirroring, and choose either "Always Allow" or "Prompt." It is recommended to select "Always Allow" only on a private and secure Wi-Fi network. Ensure your phone is connected to the same network as the Roku.
Mirroring from a Samsung Galaxy phone
For Samsung Galaxy phones, swipe down from the top right to open quick settings and tap Smart View. Alternatively, navigate to Settings > Connected Devices > Smart View. The phone will scan for nearby wireless displays; select your Roku device and tap "Start Now" if prompted. While mirroring, a Smart View pill appears on the phone screen. Tapping it reveals options such as "Cast Netflix Only," which mirrors only that app while allowing normal phone use. You can also adjust the aspect ratio if the video is letterboxed.
If you encounter audio issues, check that the volume is up on both devices, and in quick settings, tap Media Output within the now-playing media pill to ensure your Roku is selected.
Using wireless DeX
Samsung Galaxy owners can also use wireless DeX for a desktop-like experience. Activate it by swiping down and tapping the Wireless DeX toggle, or via Settings > Connected Devices > Samsung DeX > Connect Wirelessly. The phone scans for displays; select your Roku and tap "Start Now." Note that wireless DeX may have noticeable lag; switching the TV to gaming mode can sometimes improve responsiveness.
