When a foreign object blocks your airway and no one is around to help, every second counts. Pre-hospital and tactical medicine instructor Olegs Basarabs emphasizes that in such moments, a person must be able to help themselves.

One of the most effective techniques is the self-administered Heimlich maneuver. It involves placing a fist slightly above the navel and making sharp, upward thrusts. The movements must be quick and directed to expel the obstruction.

If performing the maneuver with your hands proves difficult, you can use nearby objects. Leaning against a chair back or table edge and applying pressure with the upper abdomen can produce a similar effect. Again, the movement should be directed upward.

As a last resort, when dizziness or weakness sets in, you can use your body weight by falling forward onto a hard surface or the floor. This impact may help dislodge the object.

It is crucial to lean forward during these actions so that the object moves outward, not deeper into the airway. Even after restoring breathing, weakness or dizziness may persist, so seeking medical help is recommended. The key is not to panic and to act swiftly.
