How to disable AI features in Google Docs
Google Docs users can turn off AI prompts like Gemini by adjusting settings in the document or via Gmail's workspace preferences.

For those frustrated by AI pop-ups in Google Docs, such as the “Write with Gemini” prompt, there are simple steps to disable them. According to TechCrunch, the quickest fix is to click “Gemini” on the top menu bar, select “bottom bar preferences,” and toggle off the bottom bar. This removes the AI chat box at the bottom of the screen.
To permanently disable all similar smart features across Google Workspace, users should go to Gmail. Click the gear icon for Settings, select “See all settings,” then scroll to “Google Workspace smart features.” Click “Manage Workspace smart feature settings.” Here, you can toggle off the first option, which controls smart features like Gemini pop-ups in Docs. A second option covers other smart features (e.g., automatic calendar events from flight emails) and can be left on if desired.
The article notes that some users have encountered a “help me write” feature hovering over the cursor, which is also eliminated by disabling workspace smart features. This method offers a one-time solution rather than turning off each AI tool individually. After these changes, Google Docs should be free from intrusive AI prompts.
